Bloomfield Hills was formed on April 28th, 1820 when Oakland County was divided into two townships: Pontiac and Bloomfield townships. Bloomfield covered the southern part of the county. The land that is now known as Bloomfield Hills was previously just farmland until wealthy Detroit residents bought the land at the turn of the 20th century. Bloomfield Hills became a village in 1927, then residents voted to become a city in 1932 to avoid being incorporated into Birmingham. Bloomfield Hills is home to the historic Cranbrook Educational Community, which is on the register of national historic sites.
Bloomfield Hills Resources:
Bloomfield Public Schools - Bloomfield Hills Schools are open to creating opportunities for growth and challenge for all students who live in the Bloomfield Hills area. The schools encourage the students to not only perform well in the classroom, but to take on as many hands on opportunities outside the classroom as possible. At Bloomfield, they believe that every opportunity creates possibilities. High School seniors, upon graduating from Bloomfield Hills, are accepted into their first choice college, at a rate of 90%.
Cranbrook House & Gardens - Cranbrook House & Gardens began as the home of George Gough Booth and Ellen Scripps Booth. Their home was designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn. The Booths believed their estate was created for a purpose larger than themselves, in 1922 they built six educational institutions on Cranbrook’s premises. The family deeded the home to the Cranbrook foundation in 1944, all of its contents were sealed in a trust and the estate remains open to this day. It also consists of the Cranbrook House & Gardens Auxiliary, and the Cranbrook Center for Collections & Research.
Cranbrook Art Museum - Cranbrook Art Museum calls people from around the world to view and experience art from across generations and design styles. The museum offers “transformative” exhibits in art, architecture and design. The 319 acre campus features the work of both modern artists and world renown architects. In addition to artistic exhibitions, the museum also hosts lectures and guided tours. The Cranbrook Art Museum is part of the Cranbrook educational center which was created by Detroit based philanthropists George and Ellen Booth and is designated a National Historic Landmark.
